Artist's statement

Some years ago, an off-hand comment by a photographer led me to research first photo encaustic and then the many other techniques and processes used in encaustic painting.  It opened a broad new area of expression.  I was drawn to its malleability and the possible variety of surface textures. Beginning with digital photographs, an image may go through many iterations before the encaustic process is started. My work frequently focuses on interpreting organic textures, which inspires my creativity.  Today I use encaustic, not only with photos but also with a variety of processes, such as monotypes, and combine it with mixed media.

I am very conscious of the world's significant environmental and social issues.  My hope is to evoke emotions, or sometimes only memories, relating to the changes and losses our planet is undergoing.
